Spring Cleaning Tips: Reducing Toxins In Your Home

March 11, 2014

In the spirit of spring cleaning we would like to share some simple steps for a healthier home. Many people are unaware of the questionable chemicals that are common in everyday household and beauty products.

Here are some tips and tricks to limit your contact to carcinogenic and allergenic toxins in your home.

Freshen the Air with Indoor Plants

Not only are plants great for natural decoration, but they are great air-purifiers! NASA found that some indoor plants could eliminate 87% of airborne toxins.

Some of the chemicals foiled by foliage include carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and benzene. They can even reduce dust!

Check the Ingredients in Your Products

Harmful chemicals are all to common in everyday household cleaners and even beauty products. Here you can find more information about ingredients and popular cleaning products.

Beauty products are often loaded with harsh chemicals that really aren't good for us. Lotions, hair products, deodorants, and even toothpastes often contain chemicals like DEA, MEA, TEA, petrolatum, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, etc.

Leave Shoes at the Door

Our shoes can track in pesticides, dust, dirt, and lead. Simply leaving shoes by the door can keep living spaces cleaner and healthier.

Eliminate Odors with Baking Soda

Household cleaners do not need to be filled with harsh chemicals to be effective, try using baking soda, vinegar, or products labeled nontoxic.

Limit Microwave Use

Microwaves can eliminate a lot of the antioxidants and nutrition in our food. Not only this, but standing in front of the microwave exposes us to low levels of radiation.
