Why you are what you eat

We all have heard 'You are what you eat', but we here at Katoka thought you might be interested in learning about foods that look like YOU, or your body that is. Coincidentally, some foods look like the body parts that they assist. This month we thought we could give you some tips about these great foods in order to keep you healthy!

You are what you eat #1: Carrots - Eyes

When you chop a carrot, it resembles the retina and iris of the eye. Because carrots contain vitamin A, they promote blood flow to the eyes, which in turn aids eye functioning.

Vitamin A also decreases the risk of mascular degeneration; a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field. Carrots also absorb harmful sun rays but leave you with a healthy glow because of its supply of beta-carotene.

Usually, tomatoes have four chambers, just like the heart. Tomatoes promote heart health because it contains lycopene which is known to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Studies also suggest that lycopene can help counter unhealthy cholesterol levels.

You are what you eat #3: Ginger - Stomach

Ginger root's shape is similar to that of a stomach. Ginger is well known for helping digestion. It is commonly used to soothe nausea, an upset stomach, and motion sickness.

You are what you eat #4: Sweet Potatoes - Pancreas

The pancreas shaped sweet potato is very beneficial. They help regulate sugars in the bloodstream, assisting the pancreas. Since this vegetable balances the glycemic index, it is particularly useful for diabetics.

You are what you eat #5: Celery, Bok Choy, and Rhubarb - Bones

These bone-shaped veggies promote bone strength by supplying healthy doses of sodium and silicon.

Kidney beans don't just look like their namesake, they help support and maintain healthy kidney function.

You are what you eat #6: Red Wine - Blood

The antioxidants in red wine promote healthy blood flow and can decrease the risk of blood clots and strokes. Of course, too much red wine has adverse effects, but go on and have that glass with dinner.

You are what you eat #7: Walnuts - Brain

​Walnuts look very similar to the brain. They are split in two just like the left and right hemispheres and they even have folds that bear a striking resemblance to the neocortex.

A significant amount of Omega-3 fatty acids is found in walnuts. Research has found that Omega-3 fatty acids can assist brain functioning and may even help protect against dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

As always - An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Eating healthy fruits and vegetables is an important thing to remember with all of the tempting junk foods around us today. Natural, unprocessed foods give us more nutrients leaving us feeling fresh and revitalized.
